This work provides new insights into localized controls on the vast rangeland carbon stocks. It highlights the complex interplay of factors influencing SOC across scales.Samples across six transects at 0-10cm and 20-30cm depths were compiled, with SOC measured and environmental variables representing climate, soil, vegetation, parent material, microbiome, and topography.Advanced variable screening methods selected optimized predictors like gross primary productivity, enhanced vegetation index, and soil attributes. Structural equation modeling revealed notable shifts in key SOC drivers across transects and soil depths.
