Extreme heat waves have devastating impacts on both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. A multi-characteristic heat wave framework is used to estimate historical and future projected heat waves across Australia. A Google Earth Engine-based toolkit named heat wave tracker (HWT) is developed, which can be used for dynamic visualization, extraction, and processing of complex heat wave events.

Highlights

  • Heat Wave Tracker toolkit to process and extract heat wave records from multi-source climate datasets.
  • Nine extreme heat wave datasets in Australia were generated for extreme heat wave value analysis.
  • The characteristics of extreme heat wave events in Australia over the past 100 years were analysed
  • We analysed how the characteristics of heat waves would change across Australia under future climates
